Client: Penguin Books
Main Contractor: Mitton Group
Location: Frating, Colchester
Application: Replacement of heating and ventilation systems
Founded in 1935, Penguin Books is now an imprint of the worldwide Penguin Random House, an emerging conglomerate which was formed in 2013 by the merger of the two publishers. It is one of the largest English language publishers, formerly known as the ‘Big 6’, now known as the ‘Big Five’. Penguin has had a significant impact on public debate in Britain, through its books on politics, the arts, and science.
Mitton acted as main contractors for a complex project to replace the existing heating and ventilation systems at the company’s warehousing and distribution centre in Frating, Colchester, managing all mechanical services works as well as all associated construction and decorating activities.
The project called for replacement of an existing wet air conditioning system with a new VRF system, as well as the installation of a new fresh air ventilation system including all ductwork and grilles, utilising modern heat recovery technology.
With the warehousing and distribution centre still serving as a fully operational building throughout the duration of the contract, the work presented significant operational challenges. The Mitton team established a night time working schedule, confining all activities to outside standard working hours and ensuring that all areas were clean, tidy and safe for daytime working processes to continue.
