The Morrisons store in Stranraer was a legacy from thecompany’s acquisition of the Safeway estate back in 2003. Although upgrades to property and systems had been carried out over the years, the supermarket giant deemed it was time for the store to receive a total refurbishment and facelift in line with its established ‘Fresh Look’ programme, making location more inviting to customers along the lines of today’s retail expectations.
Work carried out by Mitton Group included scoping the project, creating a totally new glassed in frontage to increase space and improve aesthetics, lifting bulkheads throughout to open up the store, a new café and washrooms as well as refurbishment of HVAC systems and upgraded gas mains.
A Challenging HVAC And Building Works Project
The Morrisons Stranraer ‘Fresh Look’ project involved a significant front of store extension designed to provide additional sales floor area, a much larger in-store café and refurbished customer washroom facilities. As part of the project, all the existing bulkheads located around the perimeter of the store were raised to open up the area and give a clear view.
The increased area required the installation of an additional roof mounted air handling unit to provide adequate comfort heating to the front of the store, complemented by new low pressure hot water entrance door heaters. Destratification fans were installed to the fresh and frozen food aisles for customer comfort. Additional boiler plant was also installed; during a previous boiler refurbishment the Mitton team was aware of this impending total refurbishment and was able to
plan in additional space back in 2017 for ease of installation, keeping costs to a minimum.
A new café kitchen was installed, including all domestic services, supply and extract ventilation, Ansul fire suppression and air conditioning to the seating area, all linked in to the building management system. An additional extract canopy was installed to accommodate a new oven and chicken fryer, matched to the existing adjacent pie shop canopy.
In addition, the project included the installation of new customer washroom facilities including all plumbing, sanitaryware and extract ventilation, new plumbing and sanitaryware to staff toilets and the installation of air conditioning for the staff canteen, again linked in to the building management system.
As part of the programme of works, inter-trade cooperation was also a consideration, requiring careful planning. Upgrade of the existing gas main into the store was scheduled to coincide with the car park construction programme managed by the main contractor.
The store was relaunched to the public on schedule in July 2019 upon completion of the five month programme.
