Transforming all washrooms at XPO Logistics’ Barnsley distribution and fulfilment centre to ‘no touch’ operation, installing taps, WC flushes and lighting controlled by sensors, as part of an initiative to protect staff and enhance safety to mitigate the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic.
XPO Logistics is a global provider of transportation and logistics services, managing pivotal supply chain solutions for the most successful companies in the world. The Barnsley site acts as a distribution and fulfilment centre for British online fashion and cosmetic retailer ASOS.
With a significant number of people working a 24 hour shift pattern, access to safe washroom facilities was considered an important issue for the business. Whilst enhanced cleaning regimes were already in operation, the company made the decision to invest in the installation of ‘no touch’ facilities right across the site to protect staff at work.
No interruptions to operational processes
Commissioned by procurement specialists Proxima, Mitton Group fast tracked the project to improve facilities for staff and enhance safety to mitigate the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic.
The scope of work covered the replacement of 79 sets of taps with automatic sensor-operated models and alteration of 65 WC cisterns to sensor operation. This included all pipe modifications to facilitate the upgrades, modifications to existing sinks and installation of new electrical supplies to each sensor tap and WC flush.
Mitton managed the project as a rolling programme to ensure the site could be kept fully operational at all times. Work was completed on schedule within four weeks.
